Portfolio Reflection Global Issues Trimester-2

Throughout this trimester, my wheel subject was GLOBAL ISSUES. I have learned many things about conflicts, disparity, barriers to development and how to make the world better. This class was unusual because everything we learn keeps changing, sometimes it feels challenging because we are only 7th graders and the problems seem so huge for us, we realized that many of the issues we discussed actually had no answers, we tried to be environmentally friendly and use no paper and we learned about issues and also had a role in educating other people in the MS too. Other classes are not like this.

The SCHOOL WIDE LEARNING RESULTS all apply to this class, however I feel that LIVING ETHICALLY fits best. Some things that we did to live ethically were to:

• Challenge the Friday Flash paper copies
• Trying to reduce electricity
• Looking at our MW carbon footprint and trying to replant trees
• Organizing AIDS DAY activities, raised money and make people more aware
• We donated food to Haiti through www.freerice.com
• We played simulation games about sustainable farming and life in Haiti
• We spoke in front of the school about AIDS and MALAYSIA WEEK

Global Issues

1. Min Lee
In the Wheel class of this trimester, Global Issues, we learnt about the conflicts going around the world. We think this class is unusual because we don’t need any stationary other than pencils and erasers. First, we were confused; why don’t we need any notebooks? However, we were shocked to find out we were using about 6 huge packs of paper each day, only in the Middle school! So we realized why we weren’t using notebooks or using blogger instead. Not only learning to reduce and recycle paper (or plastic) but we also learnt about uncountable people suffering from poverty and diseases. Not only that but we learnt so many children are not educated but instead they are helping their parents or other grown ups farming or having terrible jobs such as mining. To us, it was really unexpected facts! As this semester Proxy-Connection: keep-alive

we should stop waste food. When we see this, we feel sorry to so many others suffering from poverty. The second one is we should learn to donate and be more active in the activities for helping others. Our main UN MDG is by 2015 we should stop poverty.

2. In Sung Jung
Live Ethically

• Wearing poster
• Sharing ideas
• Bake& sale and helping people
• Research and think about African people and countries
• Think about what are we wasting
• What diseases are harmful to us
• Read the book called “If the world were a village” and sharing our mind


Like those ideas, when we share and communicate each other’s idea, we can be a good and helping class. Those of process are also helping my friends, and me, because in the other classes we can also collaborate or communicate greatly. Than our school helping other organizations. Finally we can communicate with all the other countries and organizations.

Therefore, I think when the small group or class communicate effectively, I think that communication will be bigger and we can share our idea with the world.
Also we’ve done ‘Live ethically’ processes. For examples, we are helping people, not wasting money, communicate effectively with groups (other communities).

Ayiti the cost of life

Now in the Global issues class, we are playing the game and it's relate to Haiti.
This is because, now Haiti is in really harmful situations. For example, earthquake, economic problem, treason and riot. Those of reason, now we are playing game called 'Ayiti the cost of life' and 'Free rice', both of game are helping or teaching how Haitian living now.

'Ayiti cost of the life' main story is about 5 familie members are earning money for their life, most of the part I learn about we can have a chance to know what determine the decent of family, like

1. Health
2. Economic problems
3. Sufficient education
   
4. Proper working capacity
5. Unity of family
6. All together can provide happiness

In the game, I care and always focused on checking each family members health condition.
When someone has health problem, which I can know by health degrees.
I bring him/her to hospital, and they can get over the health problem.
This is because, when one of them die, all family members happiness are going down, finally when you are not caring to their health or happiness, their family members all died.
It explain how Haitians are living, they need money, but their health is worse, or their health is bad , but they don't have money.

However, now the real situation is more worse, they don't have things to eat, they don't have enough money for buying something, all they long many people are die because of the earthquake. Also, the gangsters are riots all day and many people die.

For helping those of people, our class and other classes are playing Free-rice game. That game is donating the rice for poor people, that game have subjects like mental math, geographic, English grammar and some other subjects. It's quite fun but some subjects are hard so be careful!
